News Release: Issued 10 September 2009
City’s civic heads come together to celebrate Foundation Glasgow installation
Glasgow’s Lord Provosts reunited today to celebrate the extension of a unique exhibition which showcases the city’s history.
Four of the city’s civic heads, including current Lord Provost Robert Winter, came together to view Registers of Scotland’s installation which charts the changes in the city over thousands of years.
Thousands of visitors have watched Foundation Glasgow – The Growth of a City since its launch on 3 August 2009. Due to popularity, the show has now been extended for an additional week to 20 September 2009.
Lord Provost Robert Winter was joined by his predecessors Bailie Liz Cameron, Alex Mosson and Pat Lally at the Register of Scotland offices in George Square where the free exhibition is being held.
All four Lord Provosts have presided over dramatic changes in Glasgow from its cultural renaissance in the early 1990’s through to the Commonwealth Games 2014 announcement.
They each unveiled their favourite change in the city’s history from their time in office. Lord Provost Robert Winter chose the Commonwealth Games decision; Baillie Cameron the refurbishment of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Alex Mosson, the launch of the Glasgow Harbour housing and leisure development and Pat Lally chose Glasgow’s title as City of Architecture and Design in 1999.
The Foundation Glasgow show brings together the city’s varied history from its birth through to the contemporary Glasgow of today.
Sheenagh Adams, the Keeper of the Registers of Scotland, said: “Foundation Glasgow brings the story of the city to life and all four Lord Provosts have played an important roll in making this history. We are delighted they were able to reunite to view it in this unique presentation.
"More than 2,000 thrilled visitors have attended so far and we have decided to open the exhibition for an additional week to allow more people to experience the show.”
Lord Provost Robert Winter said: “Registers of Scotland’s Foundation Glasgow presentation offers a stylish and highly informative introduction to Glasgow: the City’s birth, development and, above all, its transformation into a modern, vibrant metropolis.
“Anyone who loves the city will enjoy every minute of the production and with an extra week to view the show more people will see the development of Glasgow over the years and its transformation into the city it is today.”
