Search Advice

Sasine Searches by name pre-1993

Users should be aware that when searching by name in the Sasine Register pre 1993 theymay be required to enter reasonable variations on surnames. For example if searching for the name of Thomson you may be required to search for both Thomson and then Thompson to obtain the result you require. On some occasions you may need to change to an Address Search.

If users obtain a nil return where they have used reasonable variations and still do not get a result where one would normally be expected please e-mail customer.services@ros.gov.uk who will confirm your result for you.

N.B. This issue will be resolved in a later release of the new Registers Direct system.

Register of Inhibtions

Users should be advised that the RD2 Register of Inhibitions (ROI) search mechanism differs from the previous service.

The reliance on the current search engine SSA Names has been removed and replaced with a more exact match search. Users may be required to enter reasonable variations on names.

The Surname field will permit an element of phonetic equivalents e.g. 'White and Whyte' would be searched for either 'White' or 'Whyte' in the search criteria. 'Mc' and 'Mac' are treated as equivalents.

Married names:- The surname field will not search for e.g. 'Strachan' or 'Delaney' if the user enters 'Strachan or Delaney', it will return only exact matches i.e.'Strachan or Delaney'.

The Forename field currently searches by Initial(s) only, e.g. 'Robert Mclaren Buchanan' will return 'Robert/ Ronald/ Rhona' etc and 'Michael/ Moira' etc.

The system will not find diminutives which begin with another letter e.g. 'Anthony' will not match 'Tony', 'Robert ' will not match 'Bob'.

We will be pleased to receive any feedback on this amended service.
