Search Advice
Sasine Searches by name pre-1993
Searches of the Sasine Register by name pre 1993 now recognize reasonable variations on surnames. For example if you search Thomson you will receive results for both Thomson and Thompson.
Register of Inhibtions
The ROI search mechanism has changed.
The Surname field will permit an element of phonetic equivalents e.g. 'White and Whyte' would be searched for either 'White' or'Whyte'in the search criteria. 'Mc' and 'Mac' are treated as equivalents. When search results include results with Mac or Mc they are ordered based on the rest of the surname.
Married names:- If the user enters 'Strachan or Delaney' the system will recognize the ‘or’ therefore results will be returned for both Elizabeth Strachan and Elizabeth Delaney.
The Forename field searches by the first two letters of the forename:
Using Edward Smith as an example, the following results will be returned:
a) Edward Smith;
b) Eddie Smith, Ed Smith, Edwin Smith etc.;
c) E Smith i.e. where there is just an initial letter in the forename;
d) Diminutives of Edward beginning with a different letter such as Ted, Teddy.
The system will find diminutives which begin with another letter e.g. . 'Anthony' will match 'Tony', 'Robert ' will match 'Bob'.
Further examples of RoS approved diminutives can be found here
We will be pleased to receive any feedback on this amended service.
