Information charter

The Keeper of the Registers of Scotland is legally responsible for compiling and maintaining public registers relating to property and other legal documents.

Our purpose is to safeguard rights by giving people access to important legal information.

Types of information

To create our registers and fulfil our statutory duties, we handle personal information such as the names and addresses of people who own property. We use this information to serve our customers and meet our obligations as an employer.

  • tell you why we need it
  • request only what we need
  • protect it from unauthorised access
  • keep it only for as long as we need it
  • seek your permission before sharing it with other organisations

In return, we ask you to:

  • give us accurate information
  • tell us as soon as possible about any changes, ie a new address
