Updated guidance on common areas and shared plots

Published: 08 March 2016

Updated guidance on common areas and shared plots has been added to a new section in our land registration guidance pages.

This new section and updated guidance has been produced to help applicants and their solicitors understand what is required when they submit an application to register a plot with a share in common area.

One key requirement of the 2012 Act Is the need for a plot, whether it is owned exclusively or owned in common, to be shown on the cadastral map with a single cadastral unit and a corresponding title sheet. The updated guidance explains the concept of shared plots and when the keeper may designate a common area a shared plot, or when transitional provisions will apply, and the guidance also provides further information on the application requirements and registration process.
