If a will is registered with us, and you have the necessary information, you may be able to order a copy.
We hold wills in the Register of Deeds.
Not everyone makes a will, and not all wills are registered with us. You may need to search elsewhere.
If you are searching for a will registered before 15 March 1993, you'll need to search the National Records of Scotland.
If you’re not sure we have a will
You can request a search by:
You'll need to tell us:
- the full name of the person whose will you are searching for
- their address when they made the will
- your name, contact details and billing address
If you know we have a registered will
If you know that a will has been registered with us you can order a copy.
In addition to the above information, you should provide:
- the deed number (this is a unique number given to deeds registered the Register of Deeds)
- the date of recording in the Register of Deeds
This additional information will help us find the will.
Plain copies: £16 + VAT
Extracts: £30 + VAT
An extract carries the evidential status necessary for court purposes.
You can pay by credit card, debit card or cheque.
If you live outside the UK, we will send you an invoice for prepayment before we send the will.
If we cannot find the will, we will not charge you for the search. If you want a copy of the results summary sent to you it will cost £20 +VAT.
