Search for a will

If a will is registered with us you may be able to order a copy.

We hold wills in the Register of Deeds.

If you are searching for a will registered before 15 March 1993, you'll need to search the National Records of Scotland.

Request a search

If you’re not sure if we have a will you can request a search by:

You'll need to tell us:

  • the full name of the person whose will you are searching for
  • their address when they made the will
  • your name, contact details and billing address

If you know a will has been registered with us you can order a copy.

In addition to the above information, you should provide:

  • the unique deed number
  • the date of recording in the Register of Deeds

This additional information will help us find the will.

Not all wills are registered with us and not everyone makes a will.

If you are unsuccessful in your search for a will with us, there are other organisations to search.
