Closure of the sasine register to standard securities

On 1 April 2016 the General Register of Sasines was closed to new standard securities. Anyone owning property in the sasine register over which a new standard security is granted must submit a voluntary registration application for that property in the land register.

One of the key policy objectives of the 2012 Act was to provide a scheme for the completion of the land register and closing the sasine register to new standard securities is a step towards this goal. A completed land register brings many benefits, for instance simpler conveyancing and more complete information about land ownership.
