You can update the name on your title sheet if you have changed your name or your company has changed its name.
You do not have to tell us if you have changed your name.
You are not legally required to change your name on the land register.
A change of name does not transfer ownership, and you will still own your property even if you do not update your name.
This does not affect your:
- ownership of the property
- ability to sell.
If you were to sell or remortgage, the solicitor acting in these transactions would tell us about your name change. We would then update your title.
If you do decide to update your title sheet
You are responsible for identifying all affected titles.
If you cannot find all your titles, our service ScotLIS can help you, or you can contact our Customer Services team.
Evidence
You will need to provide evidence that supports your change of name request.
For example, for an individual, we need evidence linking your old name to your new name and also to your property.
This could be:
- a letter from a solicitor confirming the same individual was known by their former name which has now changed to their new name
- confirmation of the position in a sworn statement or statutory declaration
You can read further guidance on reporting inaccuracies in the land register.
Fee
We do not charge a fee to make these changes.
Tell us
You can notify us of a change of name using our Public Title Inaccuracy Enquiries service.
