Sites of special scientific interest

A site of special scientific interest (SSSI) is an area that Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) considers to show the best of Scotland's natural heritage. This can include:

  • plants
  • animals
  • habitats
  • rocks or landforms
  • a combination of any of the above

We keep the SSSI Register for Scotland. Information available for every site on our SSSI Register includes:

  • a description of the land and natural features that the SNH considers to be of special interest
  • a map of the SSSI's boundaries
  • a list of actions that the SNH must usually consent to before they can be carried out within the SSSI

You can search our SSSI Register free of charge using either a map or search criteria such as town or postcode.
