Application process

Writing your supporting statement

Civil Service applications and interviews may be different from what you have experienced before.

For example, you should use the STAR (opens in a new tab) (Situation, Task, Action, Result) model as a basis for your answers in your statement and in your interview.

We encourage all applicants to view the Civil Service guidance on how to write a CV (opens in a new tab) and personal statement (opens in a tab).

Use of AI in applications

You should review our policy on the responsible use of AI in the application process.

In the interest of transparency, be aware RoS:

  • reserves the right to check answers submitted via an AI detection tool
  • may be in touch to arrange a pre-screening call to verify your answers.

Online Tests

Sometimes, you will need to complete an online test. Types of tests may include:

  • numerical reasoning
  • customer service
  • strengths
  • situational judgement
  • verbal reasoning

Anonymous shortlisting

We will assess your application against the essential criteria listed in the job advert. We do this without knowing any personal information about you. This reduces any possibility of bias.

The applications that best meet the criteria will be invited to the next stage of the recruitment process.
