Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at RoS

Published: 05 October 2022

We’re dedicated to increasing our equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to ensure that RoS is a safe place for all, where everyone is valued.

  • Equality in the workplace means equal opportunities and fairness for all employees and job applicants.
  • Diversity is the range of people represented in the workforce. This includes people across different ages, races, religions, people with disabilities, and different sexual orientations and gender identities. Diversity is also about driving a culture that embraces and values these differences.
  • Inclusion is about each individual’s experience and how safe, valued and involved they feel at work.

Why?

As a public organisation we believe we can provide better service if we are representative of the population we serve. We want to be an employer of choice, attracting and retaining the best and widest possible pool of talent.

We also want our colleagues to feel supported and included at work, so they are able to give their very best to the organisation.

Take a look at this video from Jennifer Henderson, the Keeper and Chief Executive of Registers of Scotland below that outlines our EDI ambitions.

We are shifting our focus to equity

As we work towards making RoS a more fair, inclusive and diverse place, it’s natural that over time language will change to reflect our mission.

As we looked at what we’re setting out to achieve with our EDI goals, we’ve identified that ‘equality’ doesn’t fully sum up our ambition. That’s why we’re adjusting our mission to focus on ‘equity’.

Although both terms promote fairness, equality achieves this through treating everyone the same regardless of need, while equity achieves this through treating people differently depending on their needs.

We want to go beyond offering an identical range of tools and support across the board. Everyone has different circumstances in life, that may or may not affect them at work, and in order to make sure no one is disadvantaged by their personal circumstances, we need to focus on providing tailored support for them.

We want to make sure everyone has the right support in place, which is tailored to their own circumstances and ensures that everyone has access to the same opportunities.

Going forward

We are always continuing and improving EDI in the workplace to create a fair and comfortable place to work for all! When we’re making decisions, the Equality Act 2010 will continue to underpin what we do to mitigate discrimination on the grounds of protected characteristics and enhance inclusion.

We will also use Equality Impact Assessments ongoing in support of the Public Sector Equality Duty.
