A new-look Registers of Scotland - ros.gov.uk homepage

Published: 19 December 2024

Out with the old and in with the new. A new look and structure for the RoS homepage, built for our customers, helping both Public and Business sectors find what they need from us.

The RoS homepage is the gateway to our services and is used on average four thousand times a week. It’s our customers’ initial interaction with RoS and where we can best guide them to the information and services they need quickly and efficiently.

Side by side comparison of the old and new homepage

Updated homepage

Our website supports RoS as an organisation by adding value and our last revision was almost 8 years ago. Today we’re launching the first of several significant changes to the homepage including:

  • a visual refresh
  • changes to the page structure
  • changes to the content and links based on usage data, user expectations and needs
  • updated accessibility

Public and Business landing pages

We’re also launching a new Public landing page with helpful information on all our available services in an easy-to-use layout. This will help users find relevant information and in turn, hopefully reduce their reliance on inbound telephony.

We’re currently user-testing the landing page for business users, which will be released soon in 2025.

Benefits of redesign

These pages have been designed on the basis of feedback and analytical data, with a strong focus on accessibility, making the content more relevant and easier to navigate.

We’re making it easier to update too, allowing our content team to iterate and modify the content as and when is required.

Bold, confident design

Examples of how the new homepage will look on various devices

Our RoS design is bold, informative and accessible on all devices, especially mobile where an ever-increasing number of visits happen.

The redesigned header whilst creating a sense of trust, is now clearer and confidently invites the user to use the very popular search function.

We’ve managed to include a large amount of information and links on the homepage and each section has been given its own style so they effectively segregate, helping prevent long lists of links, and making management of the content more efficient.

We’re now able to separately guide our Public and Business customers with more targeted content which allows us to capture relevant analytical data for each sector and offer guidance informing the public about how best to engage with us.

We’ve also been able to:

  • make the basic help and guidance easier to follow
  • ensure News and featured items are instantly accessible and easy to be regularly updated
  • position Data and statistics prominently
  • promote our regular Webinars both upcoming and recorded
  • keep a list of current Publications
  • feature Corporate content

Users like to understand “What we do” so we’re promoting our proud history, leading them to discover more of the RoS story and our plans for the future and The Keeper, Jennifer Henderson, takes pride of place here with a link to her popular blog.

Running in parallel with the existing website

Our intention is to allow these updates to run in parallel with the current website for a suitable period and gather evidence of usage and reactions.

We aim to update our site to the new pages in the New Year and continue to work on our user journeys, enhancing our users’ experience with RoS.

What’s next

We’ll continue to monitor the usage data and feedback for these pages, and now with the benefit of directing our users separately we can further streamline the navigation and content more effectively.

We’ll be adding the new Business landing page soon too, with a little more development and user research, it’ll provide a robust portal for those key users.

Feedback welcome

We’ve added a feedback form to allow those experiencing this soft launch to send us their thoughts and reactions to the new designs and content.

We look forward to a positive outcome from this project and to keeping you updated with further progress.
